OCR: The Scythian territory used to be concentrated around the Black Sea, later spreading to northern Greece and Persia. According to the Greek historical writer Herod, cannabis played an important role in the funeral rites of the Scythian people. The Scythians would not only burn their deceased leaders; their bodyguards and their horses would be burnt too. The insides of the bodies were removed and refilled with a mixture of different herbs, and the horses were laid on wooden stacks around the dead leader, with the bodies of the bodyguards on top of the leader, as if they were protecting him even in death. As a purification rite, they used to burn marihuana seeds in small tents, and the other Scythians inhaled the smoke and howled with joy and grief.
